Several cross-country travelers--including a writer, a family on vacation, and a professor and his wife--end up in the little mining town of Desperation, where a crazy policeman and evil forces compel them to fight for their lives

Blackwell North Amer
Nevada is mostly a long stretch of desert you cross on the way to somewhere else. And with someone else, if you're lucky...because it's a scary place. Headed down Route 50 in the brutal summer heat are people who are never going to reach their destinations. Like the Jacksons, a professor and his wife going home to New York City; the Carvers, a Wentworth, Ohio, family bound for a vacation at Lake Tahoe; and aging literary lion Johnny Marinville, inventing a gonzo image for himself astride a 700-pound Harley.
A dead cat nailed to a road sign heralds the little mining town of Desperation, a town that seems withered in the shade of a man-made mountain known as the China Pit. But it's worse than that, much worse. Regulating the traffic there is Collie Entragian, an outsize uniformed madman who considers himself the only law west of the Pecos. God forbid you should be missing a license plate or find yourself with a flat tire.
There's something very wrong here, all right, and Entragian is only the surface of it. The secrets embedded in Desperation's landscape, and the evil that infects the town like some viral hot zone, are both awesome and terrifying. But as young David Carver seems to know - though it scares him nearly to death to realize it - so are the forces summoned to combat them.

I went into this book knowing nothing at all about the plot and initially thought it was non-paranormal horror. The first third of the book truly horrified me (in a good way!) and I was looking forward to a real spine-chiller. After that, the story got increasingly bonkers which was sort of fun but took away from the element of fear somewhat. By the end, I felt much less strongly about the book as a whole but I sure can't criticize it for lacking originality!

King also released The Regulators at the same time as Desperation under his Richard Bachman alias. As a companion piece, it is interesting with the use of the same character names and other similar parallels but a different story all together.

would like to have a hold on rlangeloh and lvetterodriguez1

I'm not sure if these are even titles as they don't sound like it. If they are and are Stephen King books I would like to read them.

I guess die-hard King fans would love this book. I've enjoyed many of his books, though Desperation isn't in my top 10. I felt it was too long, first of all. After finishing the book I had a feeling I read this before?(shades of The Stand and It). King will never write himself into a corner or worry about explaining things? he simply has the (evil) force do anything it wants to do (it doesn't have to make sense) until it meets a more powerful (good) force ? in this book, God ? and the standoff begins. To me, King brought God into the plot of this book more than any others I've read, which was somewhat interesting.

While there is no doubt Stephen King is a great author with an incredible ability to write, he still needs an editor. Obviously, no one bothered to edit this novel from way, way, way, way, way, way, way, way, way, way too long. Are King's editors too intimidated to do their jobs? It certainly appears so in this exceedingly unnecessarily long wordy work. Not even close to his best work. 2 out of 10 stars for this neverending yarn.
