I was never able to read Stephen King but I do find him an interesting person. I did enjoy listening to Stephen King talking about his stories and what was going on in his life when he was writing them. The only part I found boring was when he talked about grammer.

This book unlocked Stephen King for me. I had read two or three of his books before listening to the audiobook of On Writing, but I had trouble with them. King has a very unique style of writing, in particular in the rhythm of his words. I had trouble grasping it. Then, I listened to this book, which is narrated by King himself. Not only does it offer thoughtful insights into his life, but it also offers good, common sense advice for writers. As a bonus, I learned the rhythm of his words. After listening to this book, I have had no trouble reading Stephen King, which made me happy. This book is one of my favorite books, both on writing and by Stephen King.

I couldn't get the file to play in an audio player. I think the download may have a coding error. It looks like xml code, but I'm no expert.

I first read On Writing in college as a film student and now I reread it (or listen to the audiobook) once a year or so. This memoir speaks to me on many levels: the process of writing and of being a good writer, the inerrant passion of living creatively and as a short history of one of my favorite authors.

I doubt I'll ever be a writer of novels, but there's no denying how inspired I am by the process. Stephen King describes writing a story like an archaeologist unearthing a fossil - discovering a small section at first and then, over time and with great care, uncovering the whole creation. This frames writing more like a journey, and that idea changed my life.

Stephen in sharing the craft makes it clear that good writing has three distinct parts - good writing skills, good reading skills, and connecting the seemingly unrelated together. Every writer knows the creative process is a mystery. Writers like Stephen have learned to dwell in mysterious places and create great stories.

Not meant to be a step-by-step book on becoming an author, but rather a fireside chat on what started it for him, and continues to egg him on. I think King could read you a grocery list and still be entertaining!
