The reason why the whale tries to protect itself is because the whalers first kill a female, then the large male in the pod will do anything to 0protect it's pod (family) DON'T SUPPORT WHALING!!!!!!!!!!!!!

On Nov. 20, 1820, the whaleship Essex was rammed and sunk by an angry whale. Within minutes, the twenty-man crew found themselves in the middle of the Pacific Ocean with minimal supplies. Three months later, two of the boats were rescued off the coast of South America, having sailed over 4,500 miles from the site of the disaster, with eight men still alive.
