Boogie Nights is another great film by Paul Thomas Anderson, capturing the soul and essence of a fading era and the dawning of a new age.

Anderson makes complicated, multifaceted films. Boogie Nights is no exception, casting this transition is the lives of a group of people, in this case the 'adult entertainment' industry. With the waning years of the 1970s, an age of excess, melding into the 1980s, the me decade with a meaner streak, the film casts an penetrating eye on the lives of those who lived it, the winners and losers (and sometimes both).

Mark Wahlberg turns in a boffo performance as Eddie Adams, aka Dirk Diggler who dreams of stardom and an escape from a dreary life in the seedier parts of LA. His dreams seem fulfilled when he's discovered by Jack Horner (Burt Reynolds) an adult film director. Dirk ascends the ladder of success, only to fall, far, into drugs and despair.

Highly recommended, especially to those who love complex, multi-layered films that offer more with repeated viewings.

well, burt is dead. for what it's worth, in lennon's playboy interview, late '80, he said that burt was the funniest guy alive. now he's the funniest dead guy, wherever people go after they've stopped living. i hate the cover on this special edition, but philip seymour hoffman's performance is priceless, as is bill macy's. julianne moore. burt. by all means see HARD EIGHT. p.s. you know how sometimes you can make a pun without meaning to ( a freudian slip?) well i was reading the comments below, and in one of them, the writer says he/she means to see all of Anderson's films, including, especially, HARD EIGHT, a gambling--characters study. So, i encourage him/her to do so, having seen it myself in the cinema, and having been favourably impressed with it. So say i, to you all! p.p.s melora walters is in BOOGIE NIGHTS, also; unfortunately most of her scenes appear to have hit the cutting room floor. Alfred Molina has a memorable scene with Thomas Jane and Wahlberg, playing a drug dealer, if my memory serves me on that detail.

This was like a ‘90’s travelogue of up and coming stars: Julianna Moore, Don Cheadle, Heather Graham, Mark Wahlberg, John C. Reilly, and Phillip Seymour Hoffman. Kind of like “Fast Times at Ridgemont High” that launched many careers. Cheesy music, the horrible clothes of the 70’s and shallow people hoping for fame in the porn industry. Yikes.

Interesting movie about the porno industry during the final days of film and the early days of video.

I prefer Paul Thomas Anderson's film "Magnolia" to this one, although Heather Graham as 'Rollergirl' will not be a character I'll forget anytime soon...

One of my favorite movies of all time. Hilarious, fantastic acting, slam-dunk social commentary. Stunning "comeback" for Burt Reynolds.

My girlfriend liked it more than me especially the closing scene. Oh to be young again!!!

This film is a brilliant portrait of how useless humans are, and the decay they can experience.

One could watch this film mindlessly and attain some degree of satisfaction. I remain on the fence with this one, but am confident to say that their are some funny dialogue, particularly during drug use.
