I saw Boogie Nights upon its release in the fall of 1997 and remember it as one of the most pleasurable and thrilling 2.5 hours I have spent in a theater. At the time, I knew nothing about Paul Thomas Anderson or most of the actors, with the exception of Burt Reynolds, who is a revelation as the director of X-rated features, Jack Horner.

Since enjoying Boogie Nights and earning tremendous respect for Anderson and his stellar cast, I have looked forward to all of this brilliant director's movies and never have been disappointed. Unfortunately I still need to see Punch-Drunk Love and Hard Eight.

Although it is almost criminal to single out just a few performers in the stellar ensemble cast of Boogie Nights, I particularly liked John C. Reilly, William H. Macy, and Julianne Moore. Mark Wahlberg was an inspired choice and he has never topped this role. Again, though, I must come back to Burt Reynolds. He kind of disowned this movie for a while, and that probably cost him the Oscar he deserved. Hard to understand the stories about how Reynolds was uncomfortable with what he saw on the screen--how could he have said these lines, done these scenes, and expected something more...respectable? My hunch is that BR didn't figure the movie would do very well, and then he ends up getting nominated and wanted to take it all back. Whatever. Anderson's choices in Boogie Nights were uniformly smart, and it's the presence of Reynolds, in his restrained and utterly convincing performance, that gives this depiction of 1970s culture its transcendent authenticity. One of the very best movies of the 1990s.

Paul Thomas Anderson's breakthrough film follows the highs and lows of a truly non-traditional family and is by turns sincerely sweet and affectionate as well as true to the harsh realities of this scene at this time.

Interesting movie about the porno industry during the final days of film and the early days of video.

I prefer Paul Thomas Anderson's film "Magnolia" to this one, although Heather Graham as 'Rollergirl' will not be a character I'll forget anytime soon...

One of my favorite movies of all time. Hilarious, fantastic acting, slam-dunk social commentary. Stunning "comeback" for Burt Reynolds.

This film is a brilliant portrait of how useless humans are, and the decay they can experience.

One could watch this film mindlessly and attain some degree of satisfaction. I remain on the fence with this one, but am confident to say that their are some funny dialogue, particularly during drug use.

I wouldn't call this film "hilarious". It is funny in parts as life is funny in parts. It is also disturbing in parts as life is disturbing in parts. Overall, an entertaining and thought provoking film. Well acted. Worth a look.
