This is Owens' fourth book Celta. "Heart Choice" is not Robin D.
Owens best book of the Celta collection. It is a good read, but
there are problems. Owens has shaped a world that is living and
detailed and you want to go and have a cup of caff in a cafe in
the Druidia's shopping district. Michella Clover is a womanly
woman who, we are told repeatedly in the third Celta book and this one, is sterile. We are told repeatedly she has reconciled with this. To paraphrase Shakespeare, she doth complain to much.
Straif Blackthorn, who has a cognitive genetic defect, which we
learn in the first Celta book, and he dwells, and dwells, and
dwells on this. Straif's job as the head of his family is to have
children, we are told over and over, again. Sigh. Plot wise, the
book goes smoothly except for one plot thingy (in the end it is
kind of important) that had the feeling it was cut and pasted in
to a very late version. The villian was paper thin. The
characters are enjoyable. I liked the development of a family
dynamic among Straif, Michella, and her ward Antenn. If you have
spent time with Owens' other Celta books, this is informative.
That said, it reads very well as a stand alone. Start with one of
the others, I recommend starting with the second Celta book,
"Heart Thief" before reading "Heart Choice".
