This movie was one I remember from when I lived in Suitland Maryland when the song morning after was so prevelant on the local Maryland radio stations in 1972 by marlow heights.

This is a 1972 American action-adventure disaster film directed by Ronald Neame, based on Paul Gallico's novel of the same name.
The plot centers on the SS Poseidon, an aged luxury liner on her final voyage from New York City to Athens before being sent to the scrapyard.
On New Year's Eve, she is overturned by a tsunami.
Passengers and crew are trapped inside, and a rebellious preacher attempts to lead a small group of survivors to safety.
Parts of the movie were filmed aboard the RMS Queen Mary, whose encounter with a rogue wave in 1942 inspired the book upon which the film is based.
At the end survive only six people.
Who are they?
You will never know until the end of the film.
Each person reveals his or her own personality during the surviving struggle.
You will probably identify with at least one of those people.
It is one of the most gripping and thrilling adventure films of all time.

Saw this movie at the theatre when it first came out. Forty years later it still holds the same awe for me that it had back then. Most of the stunts and FX would now be done by CGI. Looking at them now, the special effects were really something special because all stunts were actually done on camera, with the actors right there. And the characters, while a bit cardboard, were compelling and you were rooting for them every step of the way. Probably one of the best films ever made and a must see for all.

gene hackman and ernest borgnine take turns chewing up the scenery but it's shelley winters who steals the film. the dvd extras were interesting too: the big stunts used in 1973 would be all cgi today. entertaining.

Rousing tale of survival with Gene Hackman and Ernest Borgnine leading a group of passengers to safety. Good performances and dialogue throughout.
