It is the summer of 1964. In Tupelo, Mississippi, tensions are mounting over civil-rights demonstrations occurring ever more frequently. But in Paige Dunn's small ramshackle house, there are more immediate concerns. Challenged by the effects of polio, Paige is nonetheless determined to live as normal a life as possible and to raise her daugter, Diana, in the way she sees fit--with the support of her tough-talking black caregiver, Peacie.

Paige Dunn and her daughter Diana live in Tupelo, Mississippi. Paige only has head control because of polio but has persisted in raising her daughter alone. During the hot summer of 1964, the rising racial tensions in Mississippi, Diana's teenage angst, and Paige's ill-fated affair are on a collision course. Berg's novel is a very different take on being poor and totally dependent on others for care.
