The military does rely on safety measures as well as a clearly defined hierarchy. However the captain does not follow the safety measures, ie. unconfirmed order, and the XO has the fortitude to see the possible consequences of a "nuclear holocaust" if the attack is carried out. Remember the German excuse often was "An order is an order", implying the military person could not have acted. I am glad that this film shows that a person can have the fortitude to act if he weighs the consequences and find them unacceptable. Enjoy the movie it is well crafted.

Originally produced as motion picture in 1995, this thriller depicts a possible nuclear war during a period of political turmoil in the Russian Federation, in which civil war erupts as a result of the ongoing conflict in Chechnya.
Military units loyal to Vladimir Radchenko, a Russian ultra-nationalist, take control of a nuclear missile installation and are threatening nuclear war if either the American or Russian governments attempt to confront him.
It focuses on a clash of wills between the new executive officer (Denzel Washington) of a U.S. nuclear missile submarine and its seasoned commanding officer (Gene Hackman), arising from conflicting interpretations of an order to launch their missiles.
The end of the world may be around the corner, but what holds you at the edge of the seat is the performance of two superlatively fierce actors working at the top of their talents.

This DVD surely is not what it is mentioned in the description as the extended version 123 minutes , it is only the normal version of length 116 minutes.

Um... Can I give it a negative rating??
Archaic and completely absurd. Thinly veiled Leftist Propaganda (i.e. A Hollywood movie.), but with what's happened with the Internet over the past 2 decades, it should be outrageously transparent, even to the masses. e.g. CNN opens and closes the film, as the Trustworthy, Hard Hitting, Truthful news source. LOL! My favorite bit: High Ranking people in the Military get their info & find out what's happening with a brewing war conflict between the USSR & the US, from CNN on TV!! LMAO! (This during the collapse of Communist Russia. Of course, the people trying to topple Communism are the Bad Guys. Big Surprise...) Other favorite bit, during opener:
"3 Most powerful men in the world:
>President of the US
>General Secretary of the U.S.S.R.
>Nuclear Submarine Captain." Oops. Well, actually, it turns out it's really his XO!! : P
Does ANYBODY need to be told how phony EVERY situation in this film was, from beginning to end?? There are NO screaming matches like that in command, in the Military, let alone physical confrontations between officers. Duh. The Captain IS in charge, & EVERYONE knows it. He wouldn't feel his position threatened, nor would it be challenged, let alone in a combat situation. We're also supposed to believe that a 35+ yr Captain, would HAVE to, let alone stoop to, screaming at his XO to "Shut the F... UP!", and in front of his men!! LOL!!! The people that write this stuff are just liars with an agenda. Duh. How insane can Hollywood get? This movie also has ALL the prerequisites of EVERY Hollywood Submarine film, from the "Sonar Hunting, Shhh. BE QUIET!" scene, where someone screws up and creates noise, to the "Power Loss, Diving out of control to the Limits of Implosion" scene. Yawn. Zzzzzzzzz

It's called "Crimson Tide" because the sub is the Alabama. Enjoyable Cold War submarine thriller with Denzel Washington and Gene Hackman in a heavyweight acting showdown. The real winner? The audience. Almost all of the film takes place on the sub. You will be reminded of "The Hunt for Red October" more than once. The supporting cast includes Viggo Mortensen, a pre-"Sopranos" James Gandolfini, and, in his first role, Ryan Phillipe. Director Tony Scott would work with Hackman again on "Enemy of the State" and with Denzel on a bunch of movies, including "Man on Fire" and "Unstoppable," which was Scott's last film before his death. Roll tide!

One of the best thrillers of the 1990s!

Frighteningly realistic!
