Three Cups of Tea traces Mortenson's decade-long odyssey to build schools (especially for girls) throughout the region that gave birth to the Taliban and sanctuary to Al Qaeda. While he wages war with the root causes of terrorism - poverty and ignorance - Mortenson must survive kidnapping, fatwas issued by enraged mullahs, death threats from Americans who consider him a traitor, and wrenching separations from his family.

What Greg Mortenson did is is both extreme and very humbling. How can one man change the life of many - in a very positive direction? Read / listen to this book! Also, to learn about such a different culture, religion and ways of living was very interesting. The writing style and the narrator's way of reading weren't my favorites - but the content is so incredible that I couldn't recommend it enough.

If you enjoy romantic tales of white men in peril from evil foreigners, check it out of the library and fill your boots. If you are tempted to send the smarmy author any of your money, first read Three Cups of Deceit, Jonathan Krakauer's brutal take-down of this dubious charity. Why it is still classified as non-fiction, I don't know.
