It is blasphemy (and just plain inaccurate) to like this better than "Chinatown." Jack Nicholson revisits ones of his most famous roles and tries to recapture the brilliance of "Chinatown." Along with Nicholson, writer Robert Towne and producer Robert Evans return. The cast is solid (Harvey Keitel is the second Jake) and the film is impressively shot by the great Vilmos Zsigmond, but it's labored rather than intricate and the plot, while aiming for the labyrinthine quality of "Chinatown," is just messy. Look for Tom Waits in a bit part as a cop. 1990 saw the release of two other sequels to classic 70s movies, "The Godfather III" and "Texasville," which was the sequel to "Last Picture Show." The DVD includes an interview with Nicholson, who also directed.

Good neo-noir. I liked it better than Chinatown (cinema blasphemy?). It worked for me just as well, but with a more crisp storyline and better pacing. The dialogue was good. Great cast. Jack fell right back in to the role like there weren't almost 20 years gone by between films. If you liked Chinatown or like neo-noir flicks, this is a must see.
