With only 1 copy, am asking Ottawa library friends to please consider NOT keeping a 2 hour movie for the full 3 weeks. A 14 month wait is a long time ! Have rarely been on a wait list that moved so slowly.

Directed by Fred Zinnemann in 1953 based on the novel of the same name by James Jones, this drama deals with the tribulations of three U.S. Army soldiers, played by Burt Lancaster, Montgomery Clift, and Frank Sinatra, stationed on Hawaii in the months leading up to the attack on Pearl Harbor.
I've viewed this movie three times and the iconic beach scene of Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr has been firmly etched into the back of my mind.
At the time of the release, the US Army was reportedly not pleased with its depiction in the finished film, and refused to let its name be used in the opening credits.
The Navy also banned the film from being shown to its servicemen, calling it derogatory of a sister service and a discredit to the armed services.
That was a long time ago.
I'm pretty sure that both armies are now more than pleased to view the movie.

A great movie! The screenplay is excellent, and the performances are terrific!

Someone once said to me "if you wanna know how the demise of the American family happened, look to Hollywood & the sexual revolution." Years ago I thought that was a foolish statement by some unenlightened prude. But as I watch more old classic films I see how right that statement was.

Fine acting & lovely sets but this movie just didn't do it for me. The plot involved sad people making sad choices just because they could. There was no dignity in their circumstances with the exception of Pruitt who for most of the film until towards the end, had integrity. I'm not sure why this film got so many awards or is so popular. It's ultimately a shell of a film & has very little value to offer.

Nominated for 13 Oscars, winner of 7. This is a film set in Hawaii, mostly in peace time before the attack on Pearl Harbor. It is the story of individuals connected to the army base, individuals not fully satisfied with their lives. This is the film supposedly in which Frank Sinatra was given a major role on orders from the Mafia to rejuvenate his failing career (as told early in the Godfather - remember the horse's bloody head in the filmmaker's bed?).

Still has all of its power even after all these years. Some classics never grow old.

Although the original earthiness and cynical army-bashing of Jones’ book was toned down considerably by the censors, Zinneman’s film still manages to cast a few stones at the military mindset while a handful of carefully edited embraces, including Kerr and Lancaster’s famous beachside tussle, merely suggest a far deeper eroticism. The closing scenes in which war finally rears its ugly head over our lovers’ tropical idyll are an incredible blending of big screen chaos and personal horror. A true classic.

It's not really a war movie, as Pearl Harbor isn't attacked until the end of the movie and the rest of the film is character-driven. Somehow they filmmakers took James Jones's massive, bruising 800 page novel and made it into a rousing, romantic melodrama. The cast is excellent; Sinatra was in the film version of another Jones novel, "Some Came Running." Won a crap load of Oscars in 1954.

I might be the only person alive who thinks that Sinatra's performance was really not very good.

A classic, and a powerful one, but a definite downer. Not for date night. Possibly the best acting job Sinatra ever did.
