When people say that they were hooked on the first line of the book, they usually exaggerate a tad. In my case, I really was. When a friend recommended it to me, I was doubtful of it but I tried it out and it turned out to be my favourite series. The “Downworlders”, “Mundanes”, and the “Shadowhunters” are all amazing and have a way of contributing to the amazing stories and events which happen in this series. But be careful, don’t let characters or statements fool you; they may not be what they seem. Cassandra Clare has done an amazing job at creating a world that pains me to say is fictional and I would highly recommend this series to anyone that enjoys a plot twist here and there, fantasy and young adult novels because it is worth every second. This book deserves the full rating: 5/5.

A young art student named Clary gets thrust into the world of the Clave - a secret society of people who hunt demons, called Shadowhunters. Her mother has gone missing, leaving her daughter with a secret she never expected: Clary is a Shadowhunter. To save the Clave and the Downworld, she's the only one who can find an ancient cup that can defeat the Clave's greatest enemy.
Yes, the concept is unique and fascinating, but it's filled with tropes we all know. For example, Clary is the key to getting the Mortal Cup (Chosen One trope), Jace - her love interest - is a brooding bad boy with a horrible past, there's a love triangle stuffed in there, too. Also, there was a lot of unnecessary hatred between characters that could've easily been fixed with a little communication. While it's not really a criticism, it's just a pet peeve of mine. The world Clare built was amazing, I just wish she could've gone deeper, especially when it came to the Downworld. To sum it all up, if you've read YA books before or watched any teen targeted film, this is something you've seen before. Two out of five stars.

Let me begin by saying I absolutely love young adult fiction. However, in the realm of YA novels, this book deserved its "must read" reputation about a much as Twilight. This book read like mediocre 13 year old AU fanfiction with the name changed. The action was extremely boring. It took until the last track of the first disc for anything to even happen. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate a slow set up, but only if the author uses it to richen the narrative landscape. I do not appreciate a ridiculously long set up where characters wonder around with zero development of setting, character or plot. When action did occur, it seemed random and did not fit into the frame the author created. I couldn't get further than disc three. At this point, I don't even know if it is worth seeing the movie.

One of the best books i have ever read. This book is definitely a great read and i would recommend it to anyone. The combonation of mystery, action, and even a bit of romance is perfect. This author is wonderful at developing characters and you learn to love every one of them.

I got about 1/2 way through before I got bored with it. Having said that still better than some of the fantasy that I've read.
