This IS the original, 1971 masterpiece which scared the living crap out me when I saw it as a 13-year-old kid.

Be sure to watch the "Making Of" extra to learn how Douglas Trumbull pulled off the visual effects (he had just finished 2001), especially the rotating, transparent 3D map of the Wildfire facility. There were no computer graphics in those days.

I think that this film (and 2001) stand as giants in the sci-fi film world and prove that you do not need the currently obligatory and overwhelming battle/chase/chaos scenes with excessive amounts of vfx to create a stunning, believable and memorable piece of science fiction.

Hoping that this is the original theatrical version, the first is the best.

I feel asleep on Level 3 !!! BOR-RING! I'm glad I didn't know it was based on a book written by Michael Crichton... that might have kept me awake... emphasis on "might". Yawn.

I saw this one, and I found it suspenseful, and character-, as well as idea-driven. the technology was muted; I find this characteristic to be positive. the novel was a humongous hit: it made chrichton's name. for once, herein this movie, we don't have an example of Hollywood tinkering with the fictional inspiration, too much. the movie differs from so many of this genre, in that the scientists involved in the story maintain their commitment to human values, as does the defense industry. apart from the original desert town where the outbreak began, there are few casualties. this is attributable to the ingenuity of the characters played by Arthur Hill, and James Olson.

Be careful of which Andromeda Strain you watch. I have noticed the comments are placed on both. The movie is great. The remake is an excellent example of how to take what should have been a gripping story and turn it into 4 hours of tedium.

as usual the remake is no where near as good as the original. lots of special effects and a totally unbelievable plot line with characters you don't care about.

Beware of which The Andromeda Strain you select. one is the original movie, the other is the crappy remake. The person who input the information into the system didn't do a great job of differentiating the two. If you want original 1970's sci-fi, don't choose The Andromeda Strain DVD 2008, because you will get low-budget made-for-TV-Movie-style crap.

Yeah. OK. I know that The Andromeda Strain (TAS, for short) was only a Sci-Fi movie (or was it more than just that?) - But, with that said, wasn't it just like the American government and their devoted Science/Military team, back in 1970, to send a satellite out into space with the sole purpose of bringing back to Earth an organism (hopefully) deadly enough to use in germ warfare against all of their enemies (especially the Russians)?

Like, isn't that just the most awful-minded objective imaginable? And all of those naive, trusting American citizens who solemnly believe that their government really stands for truth, justice and liberty... Ha! What a deluded, laughable joke!

Based on Michael Crichton's 1969 novel of the same name, TAS was, without a doubt, one very-Very-VERY (!!) s-l-o-w moving picture.

At 130 minutes my interest in caring about whether the Wildfire Team found a way to contain the spread of the deadly virus brought back to Earth, or not, waned to the point where, after the first 45 minutes, I couldn't give a sweet-damn what the heck happened. In fact, I was so bored that I secretly began hoping that all hell would break loose with the "Andromeda" virus. But, damn it, nothing of the sort ever happened.

Anyways - I found TAS to be yet another one of those "countdown-to-disaster" movies that, unfortunately, took itself way-way too seriously for its own good. And, that, in turn, left its audience with a potentially promising story that was so cut-n-dry as to be completely void of any genuine thrills & chills.
