Although I enjoyed the book, the plot resolution seems abrupt in the story. The novel also contains some historical errors and implausible events. For example, the hottest day on record in Steamboat Springs was 94F. The temperature rarely gets above the low 80’s in July, the hottest month. Tornadoes very rare in the area. Yet a 100F day and a tornado play major roles in the plot. When the heroIne insisted on going on the cattle drive, there was no one left to care for the chickens and milk cows, etc. Also, a ranch several miles outside Steamboat Springs, CO wouldn’t have had piped in gas for lighting in 1892. There were only 5 families in Steamboat Springs in 1885. The Steamboat population was only about 2,000 until the 1970’s.

Maggie Brendan's first book in her Christian-historical-romance series, Heart of the West, is charming and heartwarming despite its' flaws. Crystal, our heroine, travels to the Coloradan Rocky Mountains in the late 1800s to live with her ranch-owning aunt. Her visit soon becomes a chance at a new life... and a new love.
Brendan seemed to be rushing with this one. I loved her Blue Willow China series, but this lacks the writing ability I know she has. The descriptions are bland and all 'tell', no 'show'. She tells us what the characters are feeling so much that we hardly get emotionally connected. Deaths are passed over with as much aplomb as a parlor tea with friends. I was disappointed, but still enjoyed Crystal and her journey. I know Brendan is capable of more, so I'm going to read on to the next book.
