Book News
The thriller genre is seen as a whole here as two editors, Morrell the award-winning author and Wagner a critic and interviewer, put together an intriguing list of the best 100 and then select the best modern voices to tell the thriller story. Starting with Theseus and the Minotaur is perhaps unexpected but soon the list rolls along with more expected candidates each with a marvelously informing short essay by such contemporary thriller writers as David Baldacci, Steve Berry, Sandra Brown, Lee Child, Heather Graham. What each shares about their matched title contributes to a full appreciation of the quirks of the genre alongside the more standard matters of its ingredients, usual suspects, lead actors and tense settings. The work's significance, impact and influence on the field's development is examined. Individual works, specific authors old and new, changes in style and tone--all of this makes for fairly thrilling reading in itself. Annotation ©2010 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)

extremely valuable book, gives one a much needed overview of the field, without substituting for the actual reading itself.

As with most books of this nature, the fun is in reading about old faves and discovering other titles (new and old) to explore. At only 100 titles, Thrillers is pretty focused, but still runs the gamut from Homers's Odyssey to (most recent title reviewed in the book) Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code. Lots of fun!
