This is one of Jules Verne's stories. It was one of the most memorable movies of my childhood, so I was delighted to find it on Hoopla. However, watching the the movie 50 years later, I realize the narrow thinking of the 1960's.

This is the marvelous adventure of two children from Scotland to the South Pacific as they go in search of their father who, after being shipwrecked, sent a message in a bottle. The board the ship of one of their father's friends and insist on help to find their father. Accompanied by the Frenchman who found the note in the bottle; the captain and his son, the adventure begins. Their search takes them through the 26th parallel; Patagonia, Australia and New Zealand. Through high mountain passes; earthquakes, sliding down mountains on a runaway boulder, then deep under the tunnels of a glacier, surviving floods, fires and volcanoes; escaping from alligators and jaguars, fleeing Maoris, buccaneers and pirates.

Australia and New Zealand would have been relatively new colonies in Verne's day. The characters refer to Australia as having aboriginals and New Zealand having Maoris; however those concepts are rather blurred in the movie. New Zealand was the first of the two countries that were colonized and more was known about New Zealand than Australia.

The special effects are just awful, considering what we have today. The story at times is fantastical, and unbelievable. But this adventure by Jules Verne is spectacular. Jules Verne was born in 1828 and died in 1905. The movie was filmed in 1962. The movie is held together by the story line of two young children searching for their father.

It gets a little unrealistic at one point, but other than that this is a fun movie.
