A thirty-seven-year-old Norwegian is confronted with his mother's terminal illness, an impending divorce, and a final blow to his political beliefs with the fall of the Berlin Wall. Petterson is a master at portraying relationships and evoking the chill of the Norwegian and Danish landscapes. As bleak and depressing as it sounds, this is a highly compelling read!

Amazing writer: the story feels very personal yet universal, and it lingers with you. I read Peterson's last book first, and now I am reading all of his other books.

I love Petterson's work. This is very good...but "Out shooting horses" and "In the wake" are better. But why should I try to sort "Excellent"? Read it!
