Acclaimed biographer Jean Fritz writes the remarkable story of Alexander Hamilton, one of America's most influential and fascinating founding fathers, and his untimely death in a duel with Aaron Burr.

Born in the British West Indies, Hamilton arrived in New York as an "outsider." He fought in the Revolution and became Washington's most valuable aidede- camp. He was there with Washington, Madison, and the others writing the Constitution. He was the first Secretary of the Treasury as the country struggled to become unified and independent.

Fritz's talent for bringing historical figures to life is at its best as she shares her fascination with this man of action who was honorable, ambitious, and fiercely loyal to his adopted country.

An interesting book, but better to read Forrest McDonald's biography on Hamilton, and read what the economist, Ha-Joon Chang [Cambridge] writes about Hamilton, to get the broadest and fullest picture of the man. The constant factor included in George Washington's most victories military campaigns was having Alexander Hamilton as his chief of staff [only Hamilton would think of sending beer kegs to the Hessian soldiers at Valley Forge the night prior their attack]. Whenever men are assassinated in the political arena, much revisionism occurs: the week prior to Hamilton's probable assassination by several men and Burr, his son was murdered in another setup duel [masterminded by the criminal and thief, Burr], thus effectively destroying the Hamlton family entirely. Hamilton was truly the Father of Our Country [if people choose to toss around that exceptionalist title!].

Hamilton's story is truly remarkable. There were so many things about him I didn't know. He was born in the West Indies, rather than the American Colonies, and lost both his mother and father at a very young age. The story of his rise from these humble beginnings to become a founding father is a great read.
