The streets of Whitechapel are awash with blood. A murderer stalks the night, picking off vulnerable women and leaving them brutally butchered. The locals live in fear and the police remain clueless, with no motive, no evidence, and no hope of catching this barbaric killer. Assigned to the case is fast-tracked DI Chandler, a novice in the business of murder, an expert in the politics of policing and three-day courses.

For what it's worth, the Knowledge Network is currently airing season 3. And once an episode has aired, for a limited time you can stream them online at the Knowledge Network site - https://www.knowledge.ca/program/whitechapel

This is the first season (with 3-episodes) of the BBC series that focuses on murders that mirror historical crimes.
Detective Inspector Joseph Chandler (Rupert Penry-Jones) is fast-tracked to move quickly into the upper echelons of the police department. To do this, he must first prove himself as a DI in charge of a supposedly open-and-shut murder case. He quickly discovers, however, that the murderer is copying the brutal Jack the Ripper killings from the 1880's.
The murders are a bit gruesome, but the characters, tension, and atmosphere make up for any shortcomings. If you are a Sherlock Holmes fan or if you like historical mysteries, then you will probably enjoy this. Unfortunately, our library only carries this first season. Otherwise I'd definitely watch the remaining two.

Very good. Hope there is a season II. Can't beat these BBC TV dramas

Interesting police story when a fast-tracked rookie DI was put in charge of a unit of old-boy cops in Whitechapel, the haunting ground of Jack the Ripper over a hundred years ago.

Gimmicky: blood & guts continually splashed in-your-face via nanosecond edits. Waste of good actors; plot convoluted by jack-the-ripper splicing; crime against film!

I didn't find this too graphic, but found many of the characters un-realistic. The new chief is too stiff and 'upper class' and the sergeant is just ridiculous.
Disappointing compared to others of this genre like 'Luther' or 'Inspector Lewis' .

Like patron pigweed wrote, this movie is extremely graphic; I didn't see the need of so much blood and guts. Also another British movie that sounded good and I tried to watch, but gave up because I could not understand the accent. English is not my mother tongue, but I never had a problem watching old British movies. For some strange reason modern British actors decided to favor a Cockney accent, which, for me, makes them unintelligible.

Too graphic for me. I couldn't watch it.

a modern-day jack the ripper seeks to replicate the original murders in the same grisly fashion and the local cops are stumped, just like the police in 1888. usually I don't care for fictionalized works involving jack the ripper but I was impressed with the suprisingly accurate attention to detail regarding the original mystery. I am interested to see if there's a season 2 and what that will entail.

Oddly not gripping. The murderous pillaging of the Whitechapel district by a wannabe "Jack the Ripper" copycat is actually somewhat secondary for the drama of the white collar manager moved for career reasons into a working stiff's police cadre. We are pretty much intended to side with the tall, white and immaculately dressed and coiffed Joe and not so much the working Joes of the homicide division. Ah, how the ideology creeps in, eh? Oh, don't think that I am saying it's bad. It
is in the end quite nice. The three episodes represent an not unrespectable way to spend an evening, in bed, with you waiting for the Tylenol PM to kick in. But if it were, bad, that is, well, then people might notice stuff. Perceptions of "Good" really do tend to work like turkey after Thanksgiving. People stop thinking, well, because it's good. You get lulled into a false sense of security.

Chandler: How can you conduct an inquiry like this? Look at you. Look at your desks.
There could be actions here. Clean it up and log it in. I want paperless desks. Use your bins... See? Use your bins...and empty them at the end of every night. And who's the office manager here? Well?
McCormack: I am, sir.
Chandler: Sort it out, McCormack! It's a disgrace! And haven't you...? Haven't you heard of showers? Or... Or irons? I mean, where are your ties? Where's your tie? Get your feet off!
-All right, I'll get one.
Chandler: It's no bloody surprise the potential witnesses aren't talking! You don't look professional and it smells in here! Get yourselves organised. Self-discipline, self-respect, deodorant. Go!
Miles: This is what real policemen look like! This is what real policemen smell like! I wouldn't expect you to understand. All your courses, they may look good on paper, but they count for nothing here! We're not paper policemen! This is a murder investigation
not a beauty contest!

Chandler: You were right about me. I'm all PR and paperwork. I can't hide it any more.
I'm...I'm not up to it.
Miles: I don't think there's one of us who finds it easy. When we're at the scene, we get on with it. There's a process. We're trained. But once we're on our own, it's different. McCormack dreams of his perfect pub. Sanders takes his kids out. He thinks we don't know but Kent has a little cry in the bogs or the car park. You say you're not up to it but being up to it has got nothing to do with the dead. Being up to it is turning up the next morning at 9am no matter what.
