In a novel set in the Depression era where poverty struck all across the country, Ms. Zettel has introduced a magical element. The allure and danger of the fey world dances along the edges of despairing human existence, where only those blessed with otherworldly blood can see them but all are affected by their enticing, perilous attraction. Callie is a determined girl, even as she is made vulnerable by her yearnings to be a part of the worlds around her. The story is set firmly in in the historical reality of segregation where Callie might be shunned or killed for her mulatto blood and the hidden world of the sidhe, whose fondness for mankind is more like that of foxes for chickens than true affection. Both worlds hold perils and Ms. Zettel’s prose neatly dovetails the attractions and perils for humans with dubious backgrounds who try to find their footing in either of them. This book enthralls, thrills and chills as Callie finds herself in one predicament after another and just manages to fight her way out of it. She is a strong-minded heroine, one of the best you’ll find in modern fiction, and her story is just beginning. A praiseworthy beginning to this series.

I love both history and fantasy, so this was the perfect combo! I totally recommend it! Can't wait for the next one!

I loved the combination of depression era history with a very dark version of fairies. Grittier magic than what you find in most teen novels. It reminded me of American Gods by Neil Gaiman.
