Caroline Evans has finally left Singapore and her wealthy, cheating husband, James, behind her. With her surly fifteen-year-old daughter Issy in tow, she heads home to England's Cotswolds.

At thirty-eight, with her life severely upended, Caroline is struggling to make ends meet, though she is coming to terms with her new life. She finds great satisfaction with her work as a chef at the Star & Plough, and soon begins to meet people and make friends. Issy adores her father and tends to blame her mother for the demise of her family, but in general life is looking up for Caroline -- until she gets word that James has either committed suicide or been murdered over what appears to be a Ponzi scheme.

Love and hate, blame and responsibility, deception and trust all collide in an emotionally powerful novel about mothers and daughters, love and marriage, and the secrets we share and those we keep.

* 1/2 stars. A divorced young mother of a teenage daughter buys a barn near Oxford, England intending to open her own restaurant. Her ex-husband dies of a gun-shot wound in Singapore, their former home. Was it murder or suicide? An unknown daughter of said former husband arrives on the scene. Sounds like an intriguing scenario, but for me the book fell flat and was far too predictable in far too many ways. Cannot recommend.

A very interesting turn of events unfolds. Mother and daughter work through them all and their differences to become close friends. Reviewed by CP
