Oates' "Because it is bitter" is IMO a very good book. Black Water also; The Falls combines popular fiction with literary fiction--very readable. Oates is an oddity. Many (including me) thought she should have a Nobel and she was nominated several times. She does not appeal to the historically male literary establishment. That historical bias has changed thanks to Morrison, et. al. (and to Oates herself), but Oates came during that in between moment when women were considered second class. She is famously prolific (and the estab. makes fun of her for it--very sexist) and the later work is uneven. She is unconventional in the way she blends fiction and current nonfiction events (Black Water) Because it is bitter is IMO great.

If this is an example of her storytelling, I'd say she missed the mark. I gave it a chance and listenened to a third of it before giving up. Bad character devopment, too many characters, none of whom Iiked. Do not know why she is considered such a great author.
