No one paints a stark landscape like Tarkovsky, but we're not just talking surface beauty; the director shows a rare understanding of the consequences of combat.

Andrei Tarkovsky's debut feature, replacing the titular director shortly after the start of filming. It is based on the story "Ivan" (1958) by Vladimir Bogomolov. Shot in black and white, won the Golden Lion of Venice, the Golden Gate Award (director) and other prizes. JP Sartre devoted a very complimentary article.
The action takes place on the banks of Dnieper in the last months of World War II. Ivan tells the story of an orphan boy, aged about 12, who lost his mother and sister at the hands of Nazi soldiers and whose father, border guard, he is gone. The action takes place in the time between the return of a scouting mission behind enemy lines and the beginning of another similar mission.

Andrei Tarkovsky's first major film is this wonderful drama about the loss of innocence and the horrors of war as seen through the eyes of a Russian orphan boy, and each shot is beautifully crafted, leading to a most poignant, devastating ending.

An incredibly powerful and heartrending film. Uses many diverse and effective cinematographical techniques.

Technically astounding but the story was weak and fairly aimless. That being said, it at no points was unlikeable.

Decided to give Tarkovsky another try, though I was bored brainless by “Solaris”. I’m glad that I did, as there are many rewards found in “Ivan’s Childhood”. Primarily in the aesthetics—gosh this movie is gorgeous. In many ways, it reminds me of “Citizen Kane” for its use of deep focus, exquisite black and white cinematography, and expressionistic framing. It also reminds me of that for another reason: the impression made of a young film maker feeling his oats. However, though the direction is skillful, the subject matter is tragic, and the title role is beautifully played, somehow the movie stubbornly resists being emotionally satisfying. Perhaps that’s a result of its own self-conscious qualities?
