Hipster illustrations and above average winter vocabulary make this a special lap-sit book. Neat glossary at the end!
Check out Up in the Garden and Down in the Dirt as well, another gorgeous creation by this author illustrator team.

The world may be hushed and white over the snow, but beneath the snow lies a busy, hidden world of squirrels, snowshoe hares, bears, bullfrogs, and many other animals who burrow underground for the long, cold winter. Using a father and daughter's cross-country ski jaunt to frame its tour of the woods' secret dens, this simple book evokes both winter's harshness and its cosy joys in gorgeous mixed-media illustrations with a mostly muted palette. Young science fans will appreciate the additional facts in the back of the book.

This is a great book that can be read aloud to children allowing them to explore "the secret kingdom under the snow." It is a great way of introducing how animals keep warm during the winter. The illustrations also add to how well this book is put together because they are detailed and nicely done. Students will definitely enjoy reading this or hearing it aloud.

This is a wonderful book about various animals and how they survive during winter, those under the snow and those over the snow, and some that utilize both. I also like the fact how the author described each animal. Moreover, the author emphasize that animals spend the winter in the subnivean zone.

Very interesting book and I really loved the illustrations. I think that this is a great book to read on a winter’s day. I highly recommend this book!

I recommend this book for reading because it explores life that lives right under us. As a child have you ever wondered where animals go when the seasons change? Each page exposes a different animal. This is a learning experience for the readers. This is a great read a loud book because of the rhyming words ans the way the text flows. Reading this book is a great way to introduce the season winter. Some kids may like this season while others may not. Either way this book is high,y suggested to read because of the unknown journey that animals go through when the seasons change.

This book is a very engaging story about a little girl who wonders about the animals that live through the winter, and how they do it. The book is an engaging story that talks about the world that exists right beneath us in the brutal winter months. The illustrations bring to life the detailed things that certain animals do to keep themselves warm and alive. Such as hibernation, winter nesting and cold-weather sleeping of North Country animals. I recommend this book to parents, children, and teachers; because it teaches about specific animals and has detailed descriptions of how each survive in the cold weather.

"Over the snow I glide, past beech trees rattling leftover leaves and strong, silent pines that stretch to the sky. On a high branch, a great horned owl keeps watch. Under the snow, a tiny shrew dodges columns of ice, it follows a cool tunnel along the moss, out of sight."

This book is about a young female who is cross country skiing with her dad. During this time the animals have their own agenda under the snow from looking for food to sleeping. This all seems quiet and normal to the little girl but they really have a host of things going on.

This book is about a young girl who is interested in the world that exists beneath her in the cold months of winter. She wonders how the animals survive, and what specifically they do to keep warm. She is very intrigued by how the animals know winter is coming, and how they know when to hibernate.
