When Marie MacPherson, a mother of two, finds herself unexpectedly pregnant at 39, she feels guilty. Her best friend, Elizabeth, has never been able to conceive, despite years of fertility treatments. Marie's dilemma is further complicated when she becomes convinced something is wrong with her baby. She then enters the world of genetic testing and is entirely unprepared for the decision that lies ahead. Intertwined throughout the novel is the story of Margaret, who gave birth to a daughter with Down syndrome in 1947, when such infants were defined as "unfinished" children. As the novel shifts back and forth through the decades, the lives of the three women converge, and the story speeds to an unexpected conclusion.

Awesome Book! The author did a great job of researching the topic of this book. Great perspective from two points of view at different times in history.
If you enjoyed The Memory Keeper's Daughter By Edwards, Kim you should definitely read this. The decisions all the women had to make were heart wrenching.
This would make an excellent book club selection.

Theresa Shea's first novel centers around motherhood. She also gives an in depth look into the early "care" of children with Down's Syndrome, specifically, a beautiful baby named Carolyn. Each of the women in this story faces choices that all intertwine together. They keep secrets from their husbands and their children. This book would be a great choice for book club. There is so much to discuss and share.

Best book I've read in a long time. Couldn't put it down. Tears at your heart

One of the best (and most heart-wrenchingly honest) books I've read in a long time. It so perfectly captures the struggles women face to balance friendship, marriage, motherhood and the incredibly difficult decisions that we sometimes face.
