Pearl S. Buck weaves a magical narrative. I was thoroughly captured by the characters and plot.

I really enjoy Pearl Buck's writing. It's warm and brings the characters to life. Madame Wu is a thoughtful, interesting woman and she runs her household with care and ability.
I liked the insight into upper Chinese culture and lifestyle. Madame Wu takes an unconventional path when on her 40th birthday she reclaims her life and walks away from her marriage bed, freeing herself from her wifely duties and intending to spend the rest of her days in study and contemplation.
The teachings of Father Andre are simple and respectful of all life forms and all human beings, regardless of station.
I found the second half of the book slowed down a little but, without a doubt, still remained enjoyable.
A nice story of loving oneself and others.

What a beautiful book! I found myself mindful and opened by the beautiful story of love written in these pages. I highly recommend this to anyone looking for a soulful read about women that isn't mucked up by silly romance. This book IS about love, but it's about learning to love one's self through love for others.
