It is very hard to reinvigorate stories that you've heard a hundred times, somehow McHugh does it anyway. By a combination of excellent illustrations and subtle changes to character's background (Snow White's evil stepmother is her actual mother etc.) she breathes new life into these chilling tales.

A collection of folktales told in all their grim glory. The stories are not toned down, and because of this, the lessons they preach are much more profound than their more delicate versions. Nonetheless many still have a redemptive, and in some cases happy, ending. These are not the original tales, but in their re-imaginings, they are reminiscent of them. While the book is filled with decorations, and darkly beautiful images, the content is not appropriate for children. However both teens and adults will enjoy the variation, and the more mature approach to some of their favourite tales.
