Bitter Seeds is a WWII spy novel in which there really are Nazi supermen and Britain uses warlocks and the supernatural to counter their power. There are a number of serious themes in the novel, most notably that the good guys have to become like the bad guys to win. While the story is good it isn’t much fun. It’s too much John LeCarre and not enough Ian Fleming. In a strange way I was reminded of No Country for Old Men.

Some great ideas on the science side. Too bad the author is vying with Norman Mailer to produce literature instead of a novel.
Much angst, soul searching and boring repetition. If anything, this book is the best of the 3. They become progressively worse until the reader is begging for someone to put the characters out of their misery.

"A mad scientist's super-powered army fights supernatural creatures conjured by occult practitioners in this compelling debut. As World War II threatens to engulf Europe, Herr Doktor von Westarp purchases orphans and sets to work transforming them into Übermenschen. Meanwhile, British secret agent Raybould Marsh recruits his old friend, warlock Will Beauclerk, to summon demons as part of an extra-dimensional counterattack. If you enjoy action-packed alternate history, check out this opening installment of the Milkweed Triptych, followed by The Coldest War and Necessary Evil." Fantasy January 2014 newsletter

I don't have time to go into detail here, but if you love Science Monster tales this is for you. Dead Nazis, pretty maids with electrodes and psychic powers on the battle field, evil boffins out to recreate our genetic history populate the oages of this thriller. And this is only the first volume!
