Sylvia Porter (1913–1991) was the nation’s first personal finance columnist and one of the most admired women of the twentieth century. In Sylvia Porter: America’s Original Personal Finance Columnist, Lucht traces Porter’s professional trajectory, identifying her career strategies and exploring the role of gender in her creation of a once-unique, now-ubiquitous form of journalism. A pioneer for both male and female journalists, Porter established a genre of newspaper writing that would last into the twenty-first century while carving a space for women in what had been an almost exclusively male field.

Book News
Lucht presents the first professional biography of the woman who began her career as S.F. Porter to hide her gender, and went on to build a veritable empire in the male-dominated field of financial journalism in the 1930s. As a personal financial journalist, Sylvia Porter brought finance home--to the housewife, and middle class. She described the formula for her column as: "Here is what is going on and here is what you can do to protect yourself." While Porter's style was personal, her perspective was global. Lucht examines the relationship between her work and women's social status over a period that saw the Great Depression, World War II, the postwar period, and feminist activism in the sixties and seventies. She weaves the seven professional strategies that brought success to Porter throughout five chapters: Wall Street crusader; glamour girl of finance; expert with an empire; presidential adviser; and brand name.
