In combat, men measure up. Or don't. There are no second chances. In this vivid account of the U.S. Army's legendary 10th Mountain Division's heroic stand in the mountains of Afghanistan, Captain Sean Parnell shares an action-packed and highly emotional true story of triumph, tragedy, and the extraordinary bonds forged in battle. At twenty-four years of age, U.S. Army Ranger Sean Parnell was named commander of a forty-man elite infantry platoon—a unit that came to be known as the Outlaws—and was tasked with rooting out Pakistan-based insurgents from a mountain valley along Afghanistan's eastern frontier. Lieutenant Sean Parnell faced an array of problems, all of them unsolvable. Betrayals were everywhere. The combat veteran who recommended this book to me isolated Parnell’s own failure as the salient one: suffering a head injury that left smelly fluids leaking from his ears and nose, Parnell insisted on staying with his platoon, refusing to be sent to Germany to be treated. As noble as that sounds, the fact is that his headaches, blurred vision, and blackouts endangered his teams. He should have been evacuated. That he was not was another failure in the command.

Great listen or read! The narrator Ray Porter makes the book come alive. Can be confusing at times to know exactly where/when they are but it's definitely worth the listen. An easy read and educational on the situation in the middle east. By the time you finish, you'll be wondering what the heck it is we're (the USA) doing over there. Worth your time if interested in modern war books. Not too overbearing w/ political views either, stays in the middle ground.
