In this book Pema Chödrön shows us how to break free of destructive patterns in our lives and experience a new sense of freedom and happiness. Drawing on the Buddhist concept of shenpa, she helps us to see how certain habits of mind tend to "hook" us and get us stuck in states of anger, blame, self-hatred, and addiction. This is a must read for all human beings. The subtitle says it all. This short book is a concise, practical guide to a better understanding of ourselves and those that surround us. I was truly inspired by this book.

Thoughtful and concise book. After reading the library copy, I immediately decided to buy this book so I can periodically read it and "recharge" myself with some pragmatic wisdom.

Excellent insight on how we can relieve our own self-created suffering and thereby, also make a positive influence in the world. In straightforward fashion, Pema Chödrön shows how we get hooked on certain stories in our lives and how we can start to separate ourselves from them. The author shares her own personal experiences and missteps, even one of the Dalai Lama's. This brings both humor and support - "If even THEY falter, then we aren't doing so badly..." Highly recommended...
