19 year-old Chani lives in the ultra-orthodox Jewish community of North West London. She is about to marry a boy she scarcely knows. The rabbi's wife has taught her what it means to be a Jewish wife, but Rivka has her own questions to answer as her own life and marriage fall apart. Buried secrets begin to surface in a story where everyone, young and not so young, has choices to make about love and desire.

This book tells the story of Chani Kaufman, an Orthodox Jewish engaged girl/young bride, and Rivka Zilberman, the rabbi's wife who counsels Chani on marriage while she doubts her own. There is lots of interesting information about Orthodox Judaism and the religious traditions, habits, strictures and social customs of this closed community (there's also a Yiddish-English glossary at the back to help with some of the terms).

Such a neat book! Chani is getting married to Baruch and this story showed some of the customs and traditions of an Ultra-orthodox Jewish community. So different and yet in odd ways, so much alike.

Extremely powerful book about the ultra-Orthodox Jewish community--young adults of marrying age and parents of them. It definitely helps to be Jewish to read the book and have respect/tolerance for different groups within Judaism. While it mostly focuses on two women, Chani Kaufman and a rebbetzin, it is not just a book about women.
