Neither as funny or dramatic as I had hoped.

Jenny Slate is not funny- end of story. Movies should not be endorsed for ideological reasons ( ie. they were made by women, were about important issues ) if they stink- which this movie does in more ways than one. Avoid like the plague. 0 stars.

Awful movie- not funny in the least. Jenny Slate should get out of the business.

Unfunny Jenny Slate gets a starring role in a " funny " movie about getting an abortion. Okkaaaay.
It's pretty disturbing when someone writes about abortion being a " non-issue " in a movie about abortion( I'm no moralist but it seems like a big decision to make to me ). You might want to reevaluate your life if you gave this " movie " a good rating- it's horrible. Don't waste your time on this piece of junk.

Brilliant. Wry. Funny. Best movie that includes abortion without making a huge deal about it.

Constantly seemed like they were trying really hard to be funny. The premise could have been a good movie, but feel pretty short.

Brave, funny, crude, original.

I was very skeptical having read a lot of negative comments below. The movie is light hearted while confronting a serious topic. Jenny Slate is funny, dorky - I found the movie thoroughly enjoyable and relate-able

Ever like something, but it makes you angry, and you're not entirely clear why? Obvious Child does that for me. It's about about a Sarah Silverman-like comedienne who becomes pregnant after a one-night stand, and decides to have an abortion. So what's not to like? I'm not saying no one could dislike this movie except on ideological grounds -- some of the writing has a sitcom-ish, second-draft feel, some of the characters are thinly sketched, and much of the bodily function humour is silly and unfunny. On the other hand, if you are living in the 21st century North America, and not a religious commune, you have been in at least a few of its situations, whether or not you talked about it frankly afterwards. On reflection, the following makes me angry: that I even considered not mentioning this film was written, produced and directed by women, because it may be dismissed as a chick flick about some unmanly stuff. That the people who need to see it most -- "weird men in robes" who make decisions about what happens inside a woman's body head the list -- are never going to see it. (See the paradox? Is abortion a man's concern, or isn't it?) That Jenny Slate, because of her features and skin tone, may be stuck in small or indie roles, unless she manages her career very carefully. (I mean, look at the real woman in the trailer, and compare it to the picture on the box. The Photoshop makes her look like Keira Knightly in an ethnic wig.) But my overall feeling is pride on behalf of the film makers, for having the guts to make a realistic comedy about an adult getting an abortion, while being true to its lead character, warts and all, and to abortion, bodily fluids and all. ETA: beware of reviews that seem to agree with and upvote one another, especially by people who live in the same general area, and post on the same day.

Obvious Child is an entertaining and meaningful flick with many chuckles.
