"Joyfully riffing on a holiday classic, Tom Averill's A CarolDickens Christmas is a moving and contemporary tale that, like the work of that other Dickens, focuses on what affects us deeply: judgment and compassion, grief and hope, cruelty and kindness. With a warm and realistic cast of characters, this is a story for people who believe in the magic of the season and--more to the point--in simply caring for each other."--Laura Moriarty, author ofThe Chaperone

It's Christmas, and Carol Dickens's life is in major transition. Her son Finn, a talented trumpet player, is about to leave for college. Her ex-husband, a real-estate wheeler-dealer, wants to sell their properties in Kansas and move to Arizona. Her wheelchair-bound friend, Laurence, has fallen in love with her. To top it all off, Scraps, the family dog, is dying. As her world spins out of control, Carol seeks refuge in her research on the use of the semicolon--and in her ritual of cooking the perfect series of Victorian holiday meals inspired by A Christmas Carol.

In comparison to Secrets of the Tsil Cafe, this was quite a disappointment. The ingredients (Dickens, wheel-chair bound friend, Victorian holiday meals) were there, but the characters failed to interest me.
