Nat Hentoff is one of the enduring voices of the last 65 years, a writer who championed jazz as an art form and who also led the rise of 'alternative' journalism in America. This unique documentary wraps the themes of liberty, identity and free expression around a historical narrative that stretches from the Great Depression to the Patriot Act.At the core of the film are three extraordinary, intimate conversations with Hentoff. Commentary and perspective are offered through additional interviews with such luminaries as Amiri Baraka, Stanley Crouch, Floyd Abrams, Aryeh Neier and Dan Morgenstern. Interwoven through it all is the sublime music of Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Charles Mingus and Bob Dylan, along with never-before-seen photographs and archival footage of these artists and other cultural figures at the height of their powers.

For all you outsiders, feeling like you never belonged because the world was too impure or because you were too shy or didn't have the guts to put yourself out there, or maybe there weren't any opportunities because you lived in a town where everyone was a really straight, in-the-box-thinker even the people who did drugs and hung out in the bars, and where there was never an intellectual conversation about anything other than how the local football team was doing or what was on tv the night before, or what was going on in the union at the local steel plant, but you knew it was all so boring and there was something wrong with all that and you wanted to get to know some interesting people, this movie is for you.....

A well made and paced doc about a jazz critic and lover of democracy.

very interesting comparison of Jazz to the Bill of Rights and the Constitution - everyone has their responsibilities but all have to work towards a cohesive whole - as a musical group or a country.
