Does one need four fully grown foxgloves for decorating a dinner table for six guests? Or is it six foxgloves to kill four fully grown guests?Sophronia's first year at Mademoiselle Geraldine's Finishing Academy for Young Ladies of Quality has certainly been rousing! For one thing, finishing school is training her to be a spy (won't Mumsy be surprised?). Furthermore, Sophronia got mixed up in an intrigue over a stolen device and had a cheese pie thrown at her in a most horrid display of poor manners. Now, as she sneaks around the dirigible school, eavesdropping on the teachers' quarters and making clandestine climbs to the ship's boiler room, she learns that there may be more to a school trip to London than is apparent at first. A conspiracy is afoot--one with dire implications for both supernaturals and humans. Sophronia must rely on her training to discover who is behind the dangerous plot-and survive the London Season with a full dance card.In...

Good fun. I've never been a steampunk fan but this was a blast. Great style and vocabulary.

This book reminded me a girls vs. boys battle like little kids used to have since the girls in the novel are taught to be good while the boys learn more evil ways.

I love this series, a lot. The fictional universe Carriger has created is impressively detailed and imaginative (I’m definitely going to check out her adult books set in this universe once I finish these YA ones) and she is so good at working within the boundaries of Victorian society and twisting the absurdities of etiquette around to her own advantage, often with hilarious results. I love Sophronia, I love all of her friends at Mlle. Geraldine’s, and I can’t wait to read book three.

Yay! Some of the characters I like are back! That made this book more exciting. I want to see how the rest of this series goes. It's just a fun treat.

There is something ridiculous and yet endearing about a dirigible finishing school. Conspiracy abounds in this, the second book of the series. After the debut girls are evaluated, Sophronia finds herself shunned by the other girls for her top marks. Someone is trying to kidnap Dimity, and Monique is up to Something. Embroidered codes on pillows, details of vampire hives, this was an excellent romp in a steampunk Victorian setting.

Excellent read for someone who enjoys humor and adventure, with a strong concept of steampunk. The characters are dimensional and plot is engaging.

I really enjoyed this second book of the Finishing Series. I thought that there was solid character development overall and the plot had enough twists and turns to appeal to adult readers. Parts of the book felt a bit repetitive and I would have liked to have heard more about what they were learning in their classes and to see the main character use those lessons to her advantage.

I feel like this book left its plotlines intentionally incomplete in order to go back to them in future books. Practically nothing is resolved by the end of this volume, no questions are answered, and the reader is left either wanting to read the next volume post-haste, or, I imagine, irritated beyond belief. I liked it, so I'm among those waiting for the third volume.
