SSgt. Kyle Vogel leaves a handwritten letter on the seat of his car, grabs a pistol, and steps into a Minnesota forest. Flash back a few months as Vogel lies wounded in a hospital near Anbar Province, Iraq. The night before he's due to return to combat, his doctor, Lt. Kelly Tripp, presses him on why he's so obsessed with collecting battle souvenirs. Kyle proceeds to tell her what happened on Memorial Day, 1993, when, as a 13-year old boy, he discovered his Grandpa Bud's WWII footlocker.

A very good movie depicting both WW II and Iraq War II. Current day Jerome Cromwell expertly plays a grandfather that tells of some of what took place in WW II. When we flashback to WW II, Cromwell's character is played by Cromwell's real life son, John Cromwell. It tickled me every time John talked because his voice is so much like that of his father, Jerome.

Good - Memorial Day (2011) 104 min. Touching film about a boy asking his grandfather to relate memories associated with souvenirs he kept from World War II. There is a scene in the film that is guaranteed to draw tears and probably one of the better scenes of one’s end every filmed – it was done with dignity and compassion. The only reservation about the film is its acting talents which are few and far between.
