The Animals were a very bluesy pop-rock band that recorded four albums from 1964-1966. They had five or six big hits, but they were one of the few bands which did not fill their albums with schlock. In fact their early albums were better (i.e. more consistently high quality) than the Stones' early albums. But the band split up. The organ player, Ches Chandler, famously discovered and managed Jimi Hendrix. Eric Burdon went to San Francisco, tripped out, and had a couple of further hits, including one with the band WAR. The Animals re-united twice - once in 1977 and again five years later, when I saw them live and caught Eric's broken tambourine which he threw from the stage. Eric has gone on to be a solo artist with some limited success.

(Lyrics excerpt) - "There is a house in New Orleans.... They call the Rising Sun.... And it's been the ruin of many a poor boy.... And, god, I know I'm one."

I consider the Animals to be one of rock'n'roll's original grunge bands. With their distinctive vocals from Eric Burden, and their gritty, bluesy sound, the Animals emerged onto the British music scene in 1963.

It was with their #1 hit song "House of the Rising Sun" (in 1964) that the Animals gained significant recognition in Canada and the USA and became a major driving force behind the first wave of the "British Invasion".

In the 1960's "psychedelic phase", the Animals' popularity ranked right up there with the likes of The Dave Clark Five, The Kinks and The Hollies.

This Animals' Retrospective CD contains 15 tracks which were all recorded in the years between 1964-1966. Three of my very favourite tunes are - House of the Rising Sun, Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood, and We Gotta Get Out Of This Place.

The sound quality is disappointing. Could be the age of the recording.
