I really enjoyed this more than the previous two! It wasn't as fast paced, but having read Holy Blood, Holy Grail ages before Dan Brown showed up, the title fascinated me. And while a bit slow, it had so many tantalizing tidbits, like Mary bumping into a young student at Leeds that enjoys reading Anglo Saxon literature name Tolkien. Lots of little things like that that really brought the era to life.
I am so glad I started this as an audio book! I love this narrator! I actually prefer her voice in my head to my imagination, which is rare.
As another commenter said, this book goes great with a cup of tea and time to savour it.

Russell and Holmes are beginning to settle into a happy marriage. One quiet day in the country, Mary gets a letter from an amateur archaeologist they met in Palestine. She's on her way to England for a brief visit, and would like to visit them, if they're going to be available. They're delighted, as they enjoyed Dorothy Ruskin. She comes to tea, they reminisce, and she leaves Mary with a gift. The beautifully carved Renaissance box holds something even more memorable, an ancient papyrus that, if made public, would turn Christendom on its head. When Dorothy Ruskin returns to London that night, she dies in an automobile accident. Or is it really an accident? Their investigations suggest not, and Mycroft agrees with them. But they have trouble convincing Scotland Yard. This is one of my favorite mystery series, and this third book is among my favorites in the series. One reason, I confess, is that I really like archaeology. While there are a few wild car chases, subtlety comes to the forefront.

Some interesting twists in yet another great story about Mr. Holmes and Ms. Russel!

I adore the Mary Russell series; falling in love with them my junior year of high school. However, as many other readers have stated, this didn't have the heart-pounding ending or suspense that the last two did. While the novel was still very much worth the read, I'm hoping that the next installment will be a little faster-paced and bring back the Russell and Holmes we all love.

I really MUST be more careful about adding comments about the books I read - I have already read this book and I thought I had given both stars and comment but apparently I did not. It's frustrating to be so excited to receive a new book from my list only to find out it's a repeat! I very much enjoyed this the 1st time around but it was not nearly long enough ago to warrant a 2nd reading.

The third installment of the Mary Russell mystery series is a bit slower and less dynamic than the first two--mostly perhaps because of the newly fixed quality of the Russell/Holmes partnership. Still quite enjoyable, but the series does begin to lose a bit of spark with this book.

One of the more mellow Russel and Holmes installments. Still thoroughly enjoyable, but a bit slower paced, if you know what I mean. Terrific plot though. Ideal to sit down with on a rainy evening with a cup of tea.
