Dominick Dunne lived a fascinating life to be sure, but this film only really skims the surface. The filmmakers have access to the man which is both good and bad. It seems obvious that Nick (as his friends called him) wanted to project a certain image of himself. He did not mention his bisexuality. He made it sound as if his wife left him because she was tired of the parties, but their lives were all about parties. His son Griffin Dunne's interview seems to be the more honest one. Sister-in-law Joan Didion seemed a bit tongue-tied. I always love the old footage and there is some here tracing Dominick's roots including meeting his heiress wife and parties in Hollywood's hey-day. Like Dominick, I'm fascinated with Hollywood stars and their lifestyles. And when some scandal occurs, I'm drawn in even closer. Dominick was met with his own tragic scandal when his actress daughter was strangled by her boyfriend - heartbreaking. It's all interesting, but I think the filmmakers fall short spending too much time just letting the camera roll on Dominick and some of his wacky theories regarding other celebrity murder scandals, etc. In the end, Dominick comes across as a bit of a huckster playing it up for the camera and never quite revealing his true self.
