But his middle school reality is VERY different--math is hard, getting along with friends is hard...Even finding a partner for the class project is a huge problem when you always get picked last. And the pressure's on even more once the school newspaper's dynamic duo, Jenny and Akilah, draw Jensen into the whirlwind of school news, social experiment projects, and behind-the-scenes club drama. Jensen's always played the middle school game one level at a time, but suddenly, someone's cranked up the difficulty setting. Will those daring daydreams of his finally work in his favor, or will he have to find real solutions to his real life problems?

Brave is a book I would highly recommend to all middle grade readers. It is a heartening story of Jensen, who is dealing with bullies and feeling invisible at middle school. Readers of Chmakova's "Awkward" will remember Jensen as the sunspots side-character, but here his story is fully realized and incredibly relatable.

Another brilliant tale from the author of Awkward that follows Jensen as he tries to survive middle school. Jensen is being bullied in a few different ways, so it's wonderful to see both versions of the classic style that everyone can pick out, but also more subtle stuff from people who are supposed to be "friends". The art is perfect.

I loved this book! The main character, Jensen, isn't the most popular kid and really just wants to be included. He doesn't realize that he's being bullied until some other kids open his eyes. I like how he thinks back over all the times he's been bullied and how in the end, Jensen does stand up for himself. I would definitely recommend this book.

I cannot recommend this book enough! The subject of bullying can be a hard one to tackle in fiction without the whole story becoming a stilted lecture (well-meaning but not exactly interesting to read). "Brave" navigates through that problem by avoiding the stereotypical bully versus bullied narrative (though there are bullies in this book, no doubt) and instead shows a world of characters who are just trying to make it through Middle School and who don't always know the potential hurt they can cause.

Svetlana is an amazing graphic-novelist who always makes diversity a paramount point in her character design choices for both girls and boys. Her art and writing style and easy for reluctant readers to get into while not sacrificing quality for ease.

Recommend for all ages but aimed specifically at middle-school children.

Another great graphic novel from the author of Awkward. Same school, different players. This graphic novel homes right in on bullying in middle school, and in life in general, defining it, finding some solutions, and showing some realities. This may not be an end-all or a golden-key solution, but I think it's a great awareness tool for particularly the young, but all ages. I strongly recommend this graphic novel.

This is a wonderful graphic novel that looks at Jensen, a kid who is unknown by his classmates, feels very invisible, and is often bullied when he is noticed. This story looks at standing up for one's self and being brave when situations arise for it. It's a great story that teaches kids about friendship, differences, and how we can all be inclusive to each other. A very touching read!

In Brave, Chmakova returns to Berrybrook Middle School to tell us the story of the affable Jensen, as well as that of other characters, both new and returning. Jensen always has his head in the clouds, and this makes it difficult for him to fit in at school. His personality and appearance make him the target of both intentional and unintentional bullying, which only makes it even harder for him to speak to others and voice his thoughts. And yet, Jensen is also conscientious, cautious, and caring. He thinks of others, sees their hurts, tries to be prepared, and wants to save everyone (especially from dangerous sunspots!). It is his desire to help that ultimately propels Brave's story forward. For, as he does so, he winds up working with the newspaper club, making better friends, and overcoming some of his own insecurities. Most importantly, by talking to others, this young man comes to realize that he was being bullied, and eventually starts to bring about social change, brick by brick, together with his classmates. Chmakova once again has made a smart and moving graphic novel for the middle grade audience that conveys their anxieties, and offers guidance and hope for dealing with them. Her art, with its manga inspiration and pale colours, not only helps to portray her story and themes, but it also successfully lets us share in the inner thoughts and feelings of this young man (school can definitely feel like a video game level sometimes).
