Bestselling romance author Jacob Churcher hasn't been home for almost twenty years--not since his mentally ill mother kicked him out of the house when he was just sixteen. When a lawyer calls, days before Christmas, to inform him that his estranged mother has passed away and left her house to him, Jacob returns not just to settle the estate but to try and reconcile with the past and the pain and abuse he experienced as a child. Also, maybe cleaning out her house will be slightly less depressing than spending the holidays alone, watching re-runs of Christmas classics. But as it turns out, the house holds more than just difficult memories, Jacob's mother had become a hoarder and he must excavate through two decades worth of clutter. As Jacob digs through the detritus, like an archaeologist, he uncovers many puzzling items including a diary left by someone named Noel, a young woman he has no recollection of, who stayed with Jacob's family during her pregnancy. That's not the only echo from the past. Jacob has an unexpected visitor, Rachel, a woman looking for the mother who put her up for adoption thirty years before. United by their quest to make sense of the past and rewrite their futures, Jacob and Rachel begin a search for Noel. Along the way they find more than they possibly imagined, including grace, forgiveness and a chance at love.

I am a huge fan of Richard Paul Evans and even read his Young Adult series. While "The Noel Diary" was good I would have to say it was not great. The plot had potential but was not very well executed. Jacob Churcher is a highly successful author - one wonders if the story is autobiographical-who is estranged from his mother. He only goes back home on her death and secrets are revealed. He meets Rachael there and the rest is predictable. All in all a good book but not up to Evans' standards.

I can always count on Richard Paul Evans to write a Christmas story that requires tissues to read. This was a lovely story of love and grace which he says is somewhat autobiographical. I notice in about the middle of the book that he mentions doing research on Route 66 to write a book -- an obvious reference to his Broken Road series. In this book he defines the difference between a love story and a romance. His books are definitely love stories and I have loved all of them.

Give me some family drama, secrets and an old diary and I am sucked in. While not a particularly strong novel in terms of plot and character development, I still read it in one day.

It didn't engage me and therefore I will return it early. I LOVED "The Mistletoe Promise", which I found captivating from the first sentence. This one... not at all, sadly.

I read RPE's annual holiday novel every year. This is a simple, quick, feel-good story that can be read in few hours. The themes include overcoming painful childhoods, forgiveness, grace, and love. This could be read any time of year. It takes place in the winter but doesn't really focus on the holidays.

This was as good as the Mistletoe Series and unfortunately we have to wait a year for the next installment. Enjoy these books and they are always a one sitting read as you want to find out the ending of the story once you open the book and start reading. He draws you into the stories and the characters of his books and always leaves you wanting more.
