A Novel

In a future so real and near it might be now, something happens when women go to sleep: they become shrouded in a cocoon-like gauze. If they are awakened, if the gauze wrapping their bodies is disturbed or violated, the women become feral and spectacularly violent. And while they sleep they go to another place, a better place, where harmony prevails and conflict is rare. One woman, the mysterious "Eve Black," is immune to the blessing or curse of the sleeping disease. Is Eve a medical anomaly to be studied? Or is she a demon who must be slain? Abandoned, left to their increasingly primal urges, the men divide into warring factions, some wanting to kill Eve, some to save her. Others exploit the chaos to wreak their own vengeance on new enemies. All turn to violence in a suddenly all-male world.

4/5 on Amazon. Weird premise where women become cocoons when they sleep and bad things happen when messed with in cocoon form; one woman is immune; men battle each other as usual.

Here's the thing. I thought this book was weird and interesting and all those fun spooky Stephen King things. BUT. When it comes down to it, I think it would have been better suited to a TV series format as the authors originally intended. I was much more interested in what was going on with the women than the drama in the town. There were so many characters that by the final confrontation at the end of the novel, there were a handful of deaths that did not have the emotional impact they could have because I didn't remember who they were. The narrator for this audiobook is INCREDIBLE - she does an excellent job both at portraying the Appalachian accents and at distinguishing between characters.

I did not particularly like the book. The scale of the book was so large, that it becomes to easy to find fault with it. The characters were not well-developed, simpletons. I prefer the books Stephen King writes now than his older books, but not this one.

LOVED this book. I am in awe of Stephen King's characters. They travel alternate dimensions and still become truer to themselves. I am happy to see that his son is exploring strange realities too.

As I read this book I feel the unmistakable urge to stay awake...
