A great show with something we rarely get on television: A novel idea. The show takes place in the distant (?) future where humans have created an old American West theme park, populated by intelligent androids to fulfill the vices of those who visit. While the concept of humanity creating artificial intelligence for some servile use isn't new, the idea of creating 'mostly' human biological synthetics that humans are know are self-aware is rare. The show does have it's flaws: The show deliberately refuses to answer basic questions about the setting. What year does this show take place? Is it on Earth, another planet or some new portable dimension? What human age of enlightenment has occurred that people keep alluding to? Why are the only people coming to, working in, or the synthetics being designed for the park English speaking Americans or Brits (the show demonstrates awareness of other languages and even another potential Medieval Japanese themed park)? Leaving questions open to be answered at a later date is a standard story trick, but being purposefully obtuse about basic facets of a story seems like lazy writing. The time element is forgivable within the show, as it is a primary plot point. That said, without explaining what is happening outside of the park or back on earth or wherever, it's impossible to gain enough context to absorb the plot.

Hopefully season 2 deals with this. Still, it's an amazing show.

Inspired by Michael Crichton’s 1973 sci-fi film, this dark drama takes viewers into a futuristic Western-themed amusement park of sorts populated by lifelike robots. Here, human visitors can indulge all their fantasies, “no matter how noble or depraved” they are.

Of course, things go haywire and glitches happen. Danger, Will Robinson!

“Westworld” has crazy-good talent behind and on the screen. J.J. Abrams is among the producers. The cast includes Anthony Hopkins, Ed Harris, Evan Rachel Wood, James Marsden and Thandie Newton. The show is visually stunning — and oh-so unnerving. Perhaps you’ll want to visit Westworld just as much as Westeros.
