A woman stumbles onto a dark road in rural Oregon—tortured, battered, and bound. She tells a horrific story about being kidnapped, then tortured, until she finally managed to escape. She was the lucky one—two other women, with similar burns and bruises, were found dead. The surviving victim identifies the house where she was held captive and the owner, Alex Mason—a prominent local attorney—is arrested. Although he loudly insists upon his innocence, his wife’s statements about his sexual sadism and the physical evidence found at the scene, his summer home, is damning. Regina Barrister is a legendary criminal defense attorney, known as “The Sorceress” for her courtroom victories. But she’s got a secret, one that threatens her skill, her reputation, and, most of all, her clients. And she’s agreed to take on the seemingly impossible task of defending Alex Mason. Robin Lockwood, a young lawyer and former MMA fighter, has just left a clerkship at the Oregon Supreme Court to work for Regina Barrister. The Alex Mason trial is her first big one, a likely death penalty case, and she’s second chair to Regina. Increasingly, she’s worried her boss’s behavior and the details in the case against their client don’t quite add up.

A great mystery, some court drama, and I thought the part about Alzheimer's was most interesting.

Philiip Margolin writes great novels mixing crimes and legal issues . THE THIRD VICTIM is another fun read in this same vein. The story is interesting and engaging and a quick read. One unexpected, interesting, and realistic twist is a subtext dealing with the problem of when a highly successful person (a lawyer in this case) suddenly begins 'losing a step' and how that person deals with it (or not), and how those who are friends and co-workers deal with it. This is probably more common in life than we think, and in my experience it is unusual to find adventure/crime novels dealing with it. A courageous addition and I was impressed with how he handled it. Good, fun read overall.

Quick read - interesting story that includes dementia and a murder investigation and trial. Quite an interesting twist at the end of this book. Bet you won't see it coming!

When I read the comments by the pros I was reluctant to read this book. I have enjoyed all his other books so decided to give it a try. It was so good I wanted to read it in one sitting. Hopefully this is the beginning of a fresh new series.

I read an early release copy of this title. It kept my interest and moved quickly. I finished it in 2 days. A lot of sexual content for me personally, however, it was an interesting read and i enjoyed it. great look at dementia and at victims of violent crimes. Interesting twist at the end.
