Electra d'Aplièse is a top model who seems to have it all: beauty, fame, and wealth. But beneath the glittery veneer, she's cracking under all the pressure. When her father dies, she turns to alcohol and drugs to ease the pain. As friends and colleagues fear for her health, Electra receives a shocking letter from a stranger who claims to be her grandmother. In 1939, New Yorker Cecily Huntley-Morgan arrives in Kenya's Lake Naivasha region for the exciting chance to stay with her godmother, the famous socialite Kiki Preston. But after a sheltered upbringing, she's astounded by the hedonistic antics of the other ex-pats in the infamous Happy Valley set. Cecily soon grows to love her stunning but complicated new home, and she even accepts a proposal of marriage from an enigmatic older cattle farmer. After a shocking discovery and with war looming, Cecily feels isolated and alone. Until she meets a young woman in the woods and makes her a promise that will change the course of her life forever.

The Seven Sisters books are endlessly intricately woven stories that take you to all parts of the world. This one is set mainly in Kenya and New York during the 40's and takes one racial discrimination and also discrimination against women. The strong women characters are beyond their time and make the best of any situation. There are two main women stories in this book, you can read it as it- going back and forth- or read each woman's story separately. Electra in NY is not as interesting as Cecily in Kenya. Definitely recommend this series.

Storylines set in Kenya and in New York intertwine to bring us Electra, Pa Salt's sixth daughter. I really liked all the tidbits of fashion, the descriptions of Electra's clothes, and loved her supporting cast: the friends and characters and employees who surrounded her. I also liked Stella, as well as all the horse scenes.

I think I preferred Cecily's story. I was more "on the edge of my seat" when reading her. I was constantly surprised as to what happened in her timeline, and being on the outside looking in to the "Happy Valley" set, watching them dance and swim and experience wild animals, was a lot of fun!

This wasn't my favorite book in the series, but I'm still impressed at the research and knowledge that was poured into this installment, as well as the rest of the Seven Sisters saga. I can't wait to learn more about Merope! (less)
