It's 2 AM on a Saturday night in the spring of 2001, and twenty-eight-year old Cecily Gardner sits alone in a dive bar on New York's Lower East Side, questioning her life. Feeling lonesome and homesick for the Midwest, she wonders if she'll ever make it as a reporter in the big city--and whether she made a terrible mistake in breaking up with her longtime boyfriend Matthew. As Cecily reaches for the phone to call him, she hears a guy on the barstool next to her say, "Don't do it--you'll regret it." Something tells her to listen to him, and over the next several hours--and shots of tequila--the two forge an unlikely connection. That should be it, they both decide the next morning, as Cecily reminds herself of the perils of a rebound relationship. Moreover, the timing couldn't be worse--Grant is preparing to quit his job and move overseas. Yet despite all their obstacles, they can't seem to say goodbye, and for the first time in her carefully-constructed life, Cecily follows her heart over her head. Then Grant disappears in the chaos of 9/11. Fearing the worst, Cecily spots his face on a missing person poster, and realizes she is not the only one searching for him. Her investigative reporting instincts kick into action as she vows to discover the truth. But the questions pile up fast: How well did she really know Grant? Did he ever really love her? And is it possible to love a man who wasn't who he seemed to be? The Lies That Bind is a mesmerizing and emotionally resonant exploration of the never-ending search for love and truth--in our relationships, careers, and deep within our own hearts.

I didn’t care for this book. Kind of an unbelievable storyline. Too many short conversations throughout the book. Made it choppy. Didn’t have much depth to the plot for me.

I gave this book 1 star: I was SO engrossed for the first 2/3rds of the book and it was an interesting and easy read. Then a turn in the book made me - not kidding - audibly gasp (at 3:00 a.m. in the morning!) because it was so unrealistic. I would pass on this one and read another of Emily's books.

Saturday afternoon started and read through. Story and characters interesting enough to keep going until the end. First book in a very long time that I’ve read all the way through in one sitting.

Another great novel written by Giffin, incorporating the events of 9/11, true and deep love vs want, and intertwines into the timelines and characters of her earliest reads. As a true fan of her work and effortless reading, this was yet another page-turner and light afternoon read.

Book #23 for 2020 was The Lies That Bind by Emily Giffin. This was my first Emily Giffin book.
It’s hard to give this book a rating. I liked the first half; the second half had a lot going on. There is a plot point involving 9/11, which upset a lot of people. I found the second half of the book to be kind of a mess, there was so much going on, and none of the characters were not particularly lovable. The best summary I can give of the story is that Cecily and Matthew broke up after he couldn’t commit after years of dating. Soon after, Cecily meets Grant in a New York bar and they have an immediate connection. They begin a whirlwind romance and then 9/11 happens. Grant goes missing, and then the “Lies” in the title start coming out of the woodwork. I guess I would give it 3 stars and hope that my next Giffin book is better!
